An annual plant is one which completes its entire life cycle throughout the course of a year. From seed germination, to flowering, to the production of sees and finally wither and die.

Summer annuals germinate during the Spring, and mature by Autumn of the same year, while Winter annuals germinate in the autumn and mature during the following Spring.

When you consider that it is so important to have good garden coverage throughout the year, the use of Summer and Winter annual plants help to prevent soil erosion during the Winter and Early Spring, when most of our gardens are barren.

The Cosmos Purity, displayed right is a Summer annual which makes any garden look spectacular, the large white petals complement the yellow and black centre.

Other annuals include the Tithonia 'Torch' and the Ipomoea 'Heavenly Blue', all are available from the Whinwhistle Nursery and Cuttin Garden.
